Engineering Operatives carry out a range of routine engineering activities working independently or as part of a team. They support manufacturing and engineering businesses by preparing, operating, and maintaining equipment, following technical documentation, and applying health, safety, and environmental practices. Their work contributes to producing reliable products and services while supporting continuous improvement in quality and efficiency.
Course Content
Apprentices will develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours to carry out planned and reactive maintenance safely and efficiently within a single engineering discipline.

Understanding and following regulations, using PPE, maintaining safe work practices, and disposing of waste responsibly.

Recognising industry processes, materials, and basic production methods.

Preparing, using, maintaining and storing tools correctly for a range of engineering tasks.

The Foundation Engineering and Manufacturing Apprenticeship typically lasts around 8 months. During this time, apprentices develop essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours to prepare for roles in the engineering and manufacturing sectors.

The End Point Assessment (EPA) for this apprenticeship includes two key components:
Knowledge Test – Assesses understanding of engineering and manufacturing principles, health and safety, and sustainability practices.
Practical Assessment – Demonstrates competence through observed tasks, project work, or a portfolio of evidence.
Both assessment elements must be passed to successfully achieve the apprenticeship.

Yes, apprentices are normally required to be between 16 and 21 years old at the start of their apprenticeship.
Employers may also set their own entry criteria based on individual business needs. -
The funding band for this apprenticeship is £4,500.
For non-levy employers, the contribution is £225 (5% of the funding band).
Government funding support may be available depending on the apprentice’s age and the size of the employer.
Under DfE Apprenticeship Funding Rules 2025/26, employers can qualify for up to £2,000 per foundation apprentice, subject to retention and progression conditions.
